Sid: This week Monday is the Biblical, the God, the Jewish all 3 are true festival of Shavuot, otherwise known as Pentecost. We’re going to be getting to a lot about that in today’s broadcast and the next two. During Shavuot we Jewish people read from the book of Ruth.
On yesterday’s broadcast we found out that there were 2 Gentile women that became widows. One went back to her own ways her own people, she liked the old ways better she wasn’t willing to move and be adventurous in the new ways. It seems to me a lot of people are stuck they’re stuck in the last move of God’s Spirit because they’re not pressing in to God right now many are going to miss the next move of God’s Spirit. They’re feeling kind of a staleness in their congregations and they don’t understand why. It’s because we’re in between a move of God’s Spirit. We had the last move, and it’s kind of fossilized at this point, and we’re about ready to hit the next move. If you are not pressing into God, and I don’t know of a better week to begin your pressing into God than Shavuot, or Pentecost. You’re going to miss the next move of God’s Spirit and if you’re getting bitter like in the book of Ruth, Naomi literally she called herself Mara which is Hebrew for bitter because her husband died, her 2 sons died, she’s stuck with 2 daughter in laws she’s trying to get rid of these 2 daughter in laws. Many of you have become bitter because… you’re blaming your pastors and you’re blaming your churches, no no no every time you point a finger at someone else you got 3 fingers coming back at you, pointing at you. Stop blaming people this is time to get close to God. The next move of God’s Spirit is coming it’s a One New Man which is what the book of Ruth is all about because Ruth, as a Gentile, could have not followed spiritual principles, she could not have. The word here in this translation “She could not have clung to the Jew, Naomi,” but after all Zechariah 8:23 says “In the last days 10 Gentiles will cling to the hem of him who is a Jew in the last days.” Because there’s going to be, and it’s not that the Jew is going to have thee favor that yes there is always favor on the Jew because God promises it in Genesis 12:3 “I God will bless those who bless the Jewish people.” For the sake of the forefathers and the promises to the fathers God says “The blessings will be on the Jewish people, however, the greatest blessing it will bring resurrection power is when the Jew and Gentile become One New Man.” That’s what the book of Ruth is all about.
So Ruth clung to the Jew, Naomi. As a result of this she went back to Bethlehem of Judea, and she started gleaning wheat and barley from the field of Boaz, also a Jew. This Boaz had something interesting to say in Ruth the 2nd chapter 11th verse: “Boaz replied,” he’s talking to Ruth, “I’ve been told all about what you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband.” So you see Ruth had favor because she clung to a Jew.
Then the 12th verse: “May the Lord repay you for what you have done. May you be richly” this is what Boaz is saying to this Gentile. “May the Lord repay you for what you have done. May you be richly rewarded by the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge.” Because Ruth clung to the Jew Naomi look at what happened the blessings in her life. She married the wealthiest guy in town, Boaz, she not only married Boaz but Naomi got life, life literally poured into Naomi because of the Jew and the Gentile coming together.
The 16th verse of the 4th chapter of Ruth: “Then Naomi took the child” by this point they had a child whose name was Obed. “Then Naomi took the child in her arms and cared for him.” She was no longer called Mara, she was no longer called bitter, she was no longer a barren woman because she now had a grandchild, and it was impossible for her to have a grandchild. God says “If you’ll put me first, acknowledge me in all of your ways I will direct your path.” She walked right into the blessings because the Jew and Gentile combined. Do you know how many blessings occurred? Well the son’s name was Obed, or Naomi’s grandson’s name was Obed. Guess what, he was the grandfather of King David. Now that’s the type of fruit that comes when a Jew and Gentile come together.
A lot of people when they celebrate Pentecost they do not know it is a God festival. They do not know it is a Biblical festival, and God says even more “It is My feasts.” At Pentecost Jewish people were gathered because it was the God festival of Shavuot. That’s why they were in the upper room. So… let’s turn to that by the way in Acts the 2nd chapter, in Acts 2 it says “When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit” and that’s key. The question is how empty are you of yourself that you can be filled? They were FILLED to overflowing. How would you like to be filled to overflowing with the Spirit of the living God? They were filled to overflowing with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues. A lot of people miss this, but if they were filled with the Holy Spirit then they began to speak in other tongues. A lot of people don’t realize this, but it is you do the speaking and God gives you the words.
“Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken.” What were they speaking in all these different languages because at Pentecost Jews had to come, according to Leviticus 23rd chapter to Jerusalem, and they had to come from every nation. So therefore, when they were speaking in tongues they were speaking languages that every nation, and even not just languages dialects of every nation. This is what they were saying in a language that the people speaking didn’t understand. It says “We hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” Then they were accused of having too much wine.
When I first became a believer in the Messiah as a Jewish believer in the Messiah, I remember how intrigued I was with unknown tongues. I remember some Christians talking to me about it and I remember saying “Do you speak in tongues?” They said “Yes!” I said “Could I hear you do this?” They said “Yes” and they began to speak in unknown tongues. Then when I became a believer I asked to be filled with the Holy Spirit and be given a prayer language. The language that… I began speaking immediately a language I had never been instructed. Then almost immediately I had it in my head “You’re just making that language up.” So I stopped using that language for a while. Then one day I was praying with an Orthodox rabbi who had accepted Jesus as His Messiah. A woman came forward who was pregnant, but the baby was dead inside of her. She said “The doctors have said my baby is dead but will you pray for my baby?” So the rabbi and I put our hands on her and we began to pray. The only thing… I mean I didn’t have enough faith to pray for the resurrection of that baby, but I prayed in my unknown tongues, I don’t know why but I did. The rabbi looked at me and he said “Sid you’re praying in an ancient form, an ancient dialect of Hebrew. You just said ‘The Spirit of the child is with God the Father.’” I’ll tell you something I never doubted my unknown tongue after, but the truth of the matter is without faith you can’t please God. Many of you will not pray with an Orthodox rabbi who’s accepted Jesus. No I take it back I pray that many of you pray with an Orthodox rabbi that has accepted Jesus because this is God’s time, this is time for Him to pour out His Spirit on Jewish people especially in the United States and in Canada.
