CLARICE: And so at 16 somebody invited me to go to the Methodist church. A friend. And I went to the Methodist church. An d I knew at that moment I had been converted! I must be a Methodist! And I came home and I told my mother, “God has put it upon my heart to become a Methodist!” She said, “WHAT?” And I said, “It’s true, mom! I hate to tell you but there’s a method to this. And I’ve got –

CLARICE: And of course God will let you believe whatever you need to believe to get you where you’re goin’! Did you know that? That’s one of His names you don’t know about is Jehovah Trickster! Now –
Audience: [laughing]
CLARICE: He sits in the heavens and He laughs! [laughs] He’s got a wonderful sense. He made all of us and, we’re quite entertaining! And so I have to confess to you. Don’t tell anybody! Okay? Whatever you do don’t tell anybody! It’s just our secret in here! The reason I became a Methodist they had the best-lookin’ youth director I had ever seen in my life!

CLARICE: And I was there for two years as a Methodist doing every method I could think of.
Audience: [laughing]
CLARICE: And by the time I was 18 I began to look around and to realize that the rich people were all Presbyterians!
Audience: [laughing]
CLARICE: It was predestined!
Audience: [laughing]
CLARICE: And so I became a Presbyterian!
Audience: [laughing]
CLARICE: And while I was in the Presbyterian church I met an Episcopal priest that said, he said, “I’ll pay you to sing in the Episcopal church.” So I became Episcopalian.
Audience: [laughing]
CLARICE: Got into bells and smells! You know I’d do it all! And then I met this wonderful man and he was more Catholic than the pope!
